Domain Registration: Keeping Things Exclusive

By Quincy Serrell

In our highly advanced era, having an online business is very much trending, especially with lucrative income potential that can be derived from the internet. In order to have an online presence on the world wide web, it is important to register domain name first. The way your domain name gets registered can have a big influence on the success of your online endeavor.

Have you ever wondered why it's important to have a domain name for your site? It's this that gives your website identity and it having it registered provides it a place on the world wide web. Domain names are completed with their extensions - .com, .net, .info, and .org are just a few examples. Whichever name you choose, make sure it is completely relevant to your site's theme.

In choosing a domain name, you can either use keywords that are relevant to your niche or one that describes your brand name. For example, if you're involved in selling mobile phones, then it should be something like mobilephones.com. Well known brand names such as Starbucks would have their domain name as starbucks.com. Whichever you choose, make sure you avoid trademarked or copyrighted names.

Another critical step to register domain name is to find a reputable domain registrar. Domain registrars are entities authorized to do business with domain names. With so many companies to choose from, it can be sometimes confusing which one to choose. A good rule of thumb is that you should check if the company is accredited by the ICANN (Internet Committee for Assigned Names and Numbers).

Each domain registrar will have different terms and conditions, some may be slightly better than others, some worse, so it is important that you do a careful review of them. Watch out for any terms that might pose a threat to the existence of your website before you register domain name. For example, a good registrar should always notify you on time before your registration becomes expired.

There are a good number of domain registrars out there that are more than capable of providing you with quality services, but of course, they charge some fees for it. At $10 per year, you should be able to get your website existing on the internet. Be careful about those that offer something less than $5 or even free - they are not always as good as they seem to be.

It is not an uncommon scenario that your first few choices of domain names are already taken and this is the time that you need to be creative. As much as possible, try to register domain name under the .com extension since it commands the highest authority. When you are ready to get your domain registered, you will be required to provide personal information similar to having an actual business registered.

Once you proceed to register domain name with your chosen domain registrar, it would be ideal to look for another reputable company to have your website hosted. This is so that you won't have to run into problems with your established website just in case you get into trouble with your registrar. It is a great way of spreading your risk, especially when you have made a considerable amount of investment already.
