Getting To Know The Key Battlestar Galactica Characters

By Cathy E. Dach

There are books, comics, video games, and of course, television shows, based around the original storylines and characters of Battlestar Galactica. The characters were first presented to fans back in the late 1970's when the original series was first released on TV. From that time, its popularity has just grown and now it has found an international audience thanks to its most recent television programs and online games. There is definitely a massive group of fans behind this science fiction franchise because it is one of few that has been able to successfully move into the gaming world and maintain a strong audience. What are some of the traits of these characters and how can you deal with both friends and foes while playing a BG game?

Battlestar Galactica displays the adventures of a small group of Humans who are forced from their home planet by the robotic Cylon creatures and have to search for a new home. The BG game follows this model with a design that distinguishes players and computer characters into one of these two factions. You can either be a Cylon or a Human at the start of the game; the option is yours when making a character. This decision is a big one because it will permanently affect the way you control your character, the types of weapons and vehicles you will be able to use, and the specific skills that your character will be able to develop.

Most of the fights in your Battlestar Galactica game will send you against either the Humans or the Cylon, depending on which side you have chosen to go with. Naturally, there will be moments when you find other creatures that do not claim allegiance to either side. You may have to fight some battles in space using your faction's fighter ships while other battles will take place on the ground using your character's abilities and items.

Social elements of online games are also present in BG games that are designed as massively multiplayer online role playing games, or MMORPG's. Because you have to work along with other members of your faction you will often find that teaming up with other players is the best way to advance through the game.

Battlestar Galactica currently enjoys a considerable fan base around the world but now it is also able to reach out to gamers. You have lots of options throughout the game, including the controversial early one of whether to play as Cylon or Human.
