Methods Used By Space Game Designers

By Pattie S. Schaefer

There are lots of space game design teams that work hard to produce intelligent, challenging, and entertaining games for players and gaming fans around the world. The modern video game market is huge and encompasses millions of gamers, each of whom prefer a specific type of game in a certain genre. Younger games tend to prefer simple games that do not present extreme mental challenges but instead are fun and moderately easy; adult gamers tend to prefer more difficult games that push their minds to the creative limit. In order to get to their target audience and make their latest games as popular as possible, modern game makers spend a lot of time designing every aspect of their new releases.

A simple space game concept, like a spaceship game or a science fiction themed shooter game, has to be developed by a good creative design team in order to make it into a great game. Designers have to make characters that fit into their game's world and that will be fun for players to develop and watch change over the course of the game. Getting characters to fit directly in the sweet spot that attracts both adult players who like complex characters and stories with the simple yet fun attitude of characters that kids prefer is not easy but can make for an excellent game when achieved.

An especially challenging part of designing a space game is making the setting for the events of the game. Games have to have creative backgrounds that remind players of general science fiction themes without seeming like they are copies of other popular science fiction games or movies; striking this balance and being creative yet familiar is a challenge. Before the game is finally programmed, designers and artists work on finishing drawings and 3D images of the characters and settings they want to use in the game.

Considerable amounts of game testing are done once the final product is just about ready to be shipped to gamers. As the time for the game's release moves closer, more and more effort is put into polishing up the game so that it is free of bugs and graphical errors when it is finally released to the public.

Some gamers are not familiar with the tremendous work that goes into making great space game releases. When you come to know all designers do to make your favorite games, you will appreciate them more.
