Variations Of The Battlestar Galactica Plot

By Willard Y. Wuckert

Battlestar Galactica is a popular and famous science fiction franchise that, in spite of having been around for decades, continues to attract new fans. The novels, comic books, and video games that are currently being produced using the BGS moniker owe their existence to the original television series which was aired back in 1978. Fans in many parts of the world are enjoying these varying adaptations and extensions of the original story and characters because it allows them a chance to truly experience the world of Galactica. Although the roles and details of some characters have changed throughout the variations of the main storyline, the essence of each character has been maintained and fans have received each of the new stories quite well.

The first set of characters was introduced during the 1978 show developed by Glen Larson; he was also behind the development of the 1980 sequel series. The core concepts of the TV show's plot were that a race of humans from a distance galaxy were being attacked by the Cylons, a race of cybernetic creatures. Although the show was cancelled after just one season, it earned a cult following amongst many fans who even protested the cancellation outside of the television studio that broadcasted the show.

A fresh version of the original television series was released starting in 2003 with a three hour miniseries and continuing as a weekly show from 2004 to 2009. The characters were mostly the same as their 1978 originals with some clear updates made in order to refresh the series and offer it a modern appeal. The fact that this later series was so much longer than the original meant that the producers could spend more time creating deep, intricate characters.

Spin off projects were immediately started after Battlestar Galactica broadcasted its last show in 2009 in order to further the storyline. The TV show Caprica was a prequel to BGS and allowed viewers to get a clearer idea of the events which triggered the storyline beginning in the first episode in 2004.

The Battlestar Galactica franchise has fans in all parts of the world who are ready to enjoy more adventures with the memorable characters of the series. The war between the humans and the Cylon will not end, whether it be in new online games or in upcoming television programs.
