5 Steps To Getting Better Printers

By Gregory Andres

Many homes and offices today have a printer as an essential component to everyday life. Though there still are a few people who prefer the value of an inkjet printer, many are choosing to buy the high quality laser printer. This is also why many professional printers will use laser printers.

The only snag that comes along with such high quality is the fact that toner cartridges for laser printers can be a bit expensive. When the cartridge runs out of toner, you will need to be prepared to shell out some extra cash for a new one. Thankfully there are a few easy steps you can take to both make the life of your laser printer's toner cartridge last longer and make your trips to the store to buy replacement cartridges less often.

First, you should try to avoid printing in color.

This tip goes for both laser printers and inkjet printers. Compared to prints made with blank ink only, color prints eventually cost much more. This is especially helpful if you know you will be printing many drafts before completing a final print; you can print all of your drafts in black and white and save the color for the final print. This is one of the best ways to save money on color toner cartridges.

Here's a tip most people don't think of; change the settings on your printer.

A good way to start is to change the setting on your printer to print in draft quality. Because most laser printers are meant to print high quality prints, the setting is usually for the printing quality that uses the most toner. Draft quality prints, however, use much less toner per print. The best time to print in high quality is if you are trying to make an impression or you are doing a presentation with these prints.

You can also save on toner by changing your printer's settings to only print black and white prints. By doing so, you will be making sure your printer doesn't use any color ink when you don't want it to. One last setting you can change to save on toner is to make sure your printer prints multiple pages per sheet.

Make sure you use print preview when printing.

Anybody who is thinking of printing can benefit from the print preview option. The print preview option helps you see what your document will look like once it is printed out on paper. You can use this option to see both the layout of your print and to help you decide if anything needs to be adjusted. You can catch mistakes through the print preview option before printing your document out.

Next, you should always be aware of the fonts you are choosing for your documents.

Though some people have preferences for font size, the best size to be printing is usually size ten or twelve. By avoiding bold text, you can also save toner.
